AED defibrillators in churches – it's already standard

An AED in churches is standard, at least in the U.S. In Poland, the number of AEDs in churches is increasing year by year, slowly but surely. Nearly 38.5 million people live in Poland*. Approximately 39% of our population attend Sunday Mass*, meaning 15 million people gather in churches for Sunday religious services. 40,000 people suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in Poland each year, of which only 5% survive.

This means that nearly 38,000 people die from SCA each year!

A Home AED? Why Not?

Where are AEDs most often seen? Who owns these devices? Should defibrillators be located only in high-density locations, such as train stations, airports, supermarkets, institutions, swimming pools, sports halls, cinemas, schools, etc. What about people who have had a heart attack and spend much of their lives at home? Should we also have an AED at home? Is it appropriate to give an AED as a gift to mom, dad, grandma, or uncle?

AED, or Automated External Defibrillator – a technical approach

  Is there a difference in effectiveness between different types of AEDs? Automated External Defibrillators available on the Polish market meet the guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council and enable life-saving measures. No manufacturer can claim that their device saves lives more effectively than models from other brands. There is also no correlation between price and life-saving capabilities. Some models are suitable for more demanding conditions or are more resistant to impact or water, but each saves lives equally. They may differ only in appearance and the way commands are transmitted. But that's all.

AED, or Automated External Defibrillator – operation

Is it safe to use an AED? Yes, using an AED is safe. By following AED instructions, we can't harm anyone. Most importantly, don't touch the victim while the ECG is being analyzed and a defibrillation shock is being delivered (which the AED clearly states). After analyzing the heartbeat, AEDs indicate whether a shock is necessary or not. If the patient does not require a shock, the defibrillator will not deliver a shock. An electrical shock is delivered only if the ECG analysis indicates a shock is necessary, meaning the AED has detected cardiac arrest in ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.

   What does the abbreviation SCA mean? SCA stands for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This is a condition in which the heart stops beating properly. The person loses consciousness, then stops breathing, and ultimately, irreversible brain damage occurs. The heart muscle begins to contract out of sync. This causes the heart to stop pumping blood.
