14 Facts About AEDs

Fact 1: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in Poland, killing 38,000 people each year. Every hour, four people die from SCA in Poland!

Fact 2: A heart attack can affect people of any age, regardless of gender, race, or health condition.

Fact 3: An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a device used to restore normal heart rhythm after applying an electrical impulse.

Fact 4: Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is an abnormal heart rhythm that most often leads to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA can be treated with an AED.

Fact 5: 40,000 people suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in Poland each year, of which only 5% are saved. This is due to limited AED availability.

Fact 6: If a SCA victim receives help with an AED in the first four minutes, their chances of survival increase to 90%.

Fact 7: For every minute of delay in defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 7–10%.

Fact 8: 30% – 50% of SCA victims could survive if they received defibrillator assistance within five minutes.

Fact 9: The AED analyzes the heart function of a person who has suffered a cardiac arrest and, if necessary, recommends defibrillation.

Fact 10: If the injured person does not require defibrillation, the AED will not recommend defibrillation.

Fact 11: AEDs issue voice commands, allowing people without medical training to easily operate them.

Fact 12: If defibrillation is delayed for more than ten minutes, the survival rate is less than 5%.

Fact 13: SCA most often affects people staying at home (57% – 75%) who do not have access to an AED.

Fact 14: An electrical impulse is delivered to the injured person via electrodes.
